P2264: Water in fuel sensor circuit fault

What P2264 means

Diesel engines have a sensor in the fuel filter that detects collected water, so it can warn you before the water reaches the injection system. This code does not mean there is water, but that the sensor circuit has a fault, so the car cannot warn you if water gets in.

Most common causes

• Loose, dirty or corroded connector on the filter sensor
• Sensor badly fitted or left off after a filter change
• Damaged wiring near the filter
• Faulty water sensor
• Non genuine fuel filter without the right mounting for the sensor

Symptoms

• Engine warning light on
• Sometimes a water in fuel warning with no reason
• Engine usually runs as normal

Can you drive with P2264?

With care You can drive, but the car will no longer warn you if water gets into the diesel. Get it checked soon and drain the filter if in doubt.

How to check it

If the code appeared right after a fuel filter change, first check that the sensor and its connector were refitted properly. Draining water from the filter through its bottom drain screw is a good way to rule out real water.
