P2269: Water in fuel detected

What P2269 means

The diesel filter holds back water carried in the fuel and a sensor warns when too much has collected. If it is not drained, water can get into the high pressure pump and injectors, which are very sensitive and expensive to repair. It usually comes from contaminated fuel or condensation in the tank.

Most common causes

• Water collected in the filter that needs draining
• Filling up with diesel contaminated with water
• Condensation in the tank from often running with little fuel
• Old or saturated fuel filter
• Water sensor giving a false alarm (if the warning stays after draining)

Symptoms

• Engine warning or water in fuel light on
• Jerking or uneven running
• Hard starting
• Loss of power

Can you drive with P2269?

Better not Only drive as much as you have to until the filter is drained: water can damage the high pressure pump and injectors.

How to check it

Diesel filters usually have a drain screw or tap underneath: letting a little out into a clear container shows whether there is water (it settles at the bottom). If a lot comes out or the warning returns quickly, have the tank checked.
