P2200: NOx sensor circuit fault (bank 1)

What P2200 means

The NOx sensor measures nitrogen oxides in the exhaust to control emission systems such as AdBlue (SCR) or certain catalysts. It has its own small control module attached. This code means the sensor circuit is not working as it should, almost always because of an electrical problem.

Most common causes

• Loose, dirty or corroded sensor connector
• Wiring damaged by heat or chafing under the car
• Faulty fuse or power supply to the sensor
• Failed NOx sensor (the sensor and its module usually come as one unit)
• Communication fault between the sensor module and the ECU

Symptoms

• Engine warning light on
• Sometimes an AdBlue or emissions warning
• Possible power limitation on some cars
• Engine usually runs as normal

Can you drive with P2200?

With care You can drive, but on some AdBlue diesels the fault can lead to reduced power or a warning that the engine will not restart after a set distance. Get it to a workshop soon.

How to check it

Check whether there are communication codes (starting with U) stored at the same time: if so, the problem is often the power supply or wiring to the sensor module rather than the sensor. If the car shows a distance countdown, write it down.
