P2227: Barometric pressure sensor A range or performance problem

The barometric pressure reading does not agree with other sensors. Usually the sensor itself or a fault with the intake pressure sensor.

What P2227 means

The barometric pressure sensor measures outside air pressure, which changes with altitude and weather. The ECU uses it to work out the mixture and turbo boost. With the engine off, this reading should be close to the intake pressure sensor; if they disagree or the value is impossible, the code is set. On many cars the sensor is built into the ECU.

Most common causes

  • Intake manifold pressure (MAP) sensor reading wrongly and upsetting the comparison
  • Blocked hose or port on the barometric sensor (if it is separate)
  • Moisture or corrosion in the connector
  • Faulty barometric sensor
  • Internal ECU fault where the sensor is built in

  • Engine warning light on
  • Possible lack of power or limited boost
  • Fuel consumption slightly off
  • Sometimes no noticeable symptom

Can you drive with P2227?

With care You can drive, but the ECU may fall back on a default value and limit power. Do not leave it too long.

How to check it

With the ignition on and engine off, compare live barometric pressure and intake manifold pressure (MAP): they should read almost the same, around 100 kPa at sea level and a bit less at altitude. The one that is out is the suspect.
