P2463: Diesel particulate filter restriction: soot accumulation

The diesel particulate filter holds more soot than it should and has not been cleaned in time. Short trips or failed regenerations are typical causes.

What P2463 means

The particulate filter traps diesel soot and burns it off now and then in a regeneration. The ECU estimates it is now overloaded, usually because regenerations have not been able to finish. If it fills too far, it may no longer be allowed to regenerate automatically.

Most common causes

  • Lots of short trips that never let regenerations finish
  • Differential pressure sensor or its pipes giving wrong readings
  • Faulty exhaust temperature sensor preventing regeneration
  • Engine producing excess soot: injector, EGR or intake leak
  • Another stored fault code that blocks regeneration

Symptoms

  • Engine or DPF warning light on
  • Loss of power or limp mode
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Fan keeps running after switching off

Can you drive with P2463?

With care You can drive with care, but deal with it soon. If the filter keeps filling, a forced regeneration at the garage becomes riskier and may end in the filter being cleaned or replaced.

How to check it

Check the estimated soot load on your scanner and look for any other stored codes: fixing those first often unlocks regeneration. If the load is not extreme, a steady motorway run may be enough.
