P2425: EGR cooler valve control circuit open or faulty

The ECU cannot control the valve that decides whether EGR gas flows through its cooler or bypasses it. Usually a wire, connector or the valve.

What P2425 means

On many engines, especially diesels, recirculated exhaust gas passes through an EGR cooler. A valve, often called the bypass valve, sends the gas through the cooler or around it depending on engine temperature. The ECU has detected an open circuit or electrical fault in that valve’s control line.

Most common causes

  • Valve connector loose, dirty or corroded
  • Broken or damaged wire between valve and ECU
  • Faulty vacuum solenoid or valve actuator
  • Blown fuse or poor supply to the circuit
  • ECU fault (uncommon)

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Often nothing noticeable
  • On some cars slightly more smoke or emissions when cold

How to check it

Find the valve next to the EGR cooler and check its connector is firmly seated and free of green corrosion. If it is vacuum operated, make sure the small rubber hose is not loose or split.
