P2413: Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system performance
The system that feeds some exhaust gas back into the intake is not having the expected effect. Carbon build-up in the EGR valve or its pipes is typical.
| Code | P2413 |
|---|---|
| System | Engine and transmission |
| Group | P24xx, EGR, EVAP and particulate filter |
| Type | Generic: it means the same on every make |
| Can you keep driving? | With care |
What P2413 means
The EGR valve sends a little exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperature and nitrogen oxide emissions. The ECU has found that the actual flow does not match what it asked for: too much gas is getting through, or too little.
Most common causes
- EGR valve or passages clogged with carbon
- EGR valve sticking open or closed
- Leak in EGR pipes or gaskets
- Blocked EGR cooler (on engines fitted with one)
- Air flow or intake pressure sensor giving wrong readings
- Damaged vacuum hose or EGR control solenoid
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on
- Hesitation or lack of pull at low revs
- Rough idle or stalling
- More smoke on diesels
- Possible limp mode
Can you drive with P2413?
With care You can drive, but get it looked at soon: an EGR valve stuck open makes the engine run poorly and can put the car into limp mode.
How to check it
Use your scanner’s live data to compare the commanded and actual EGR valve position, if your car reports them. If the actual value does not follow the commanded one, the valve is sticking or dirty.
How to read and clear P2413 with Final OBD
Plug an OBD2 scanner in under the steering wheel, switch the ignition on and open Final OBD. Under Faults you’ll see P2413 with this same explanation and whether it’s confirmed, pending or permanent.
With Free you read this code with its short description for nothing, and clear it if the engine stores it over standard OBD. With Pro you get the full explanation, how the car was running when it was logged (revs, temperature, load) and clearing in every control unit.
Clearing the code only turns the light off: if the cause is still there, it comes back. Clear it once it’s fixed, and not right before the ITV. It’s all in how to read and clear fault codes and in the ITV and OBD.

P2413 is a generic code, so it means the same on any make, for example on BMW, Ford, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Volkswagen. See what Final OBD does on your car in makes and models.

How do you clear P2413?
With an OBD2 scanner and an app like Final OBD, which clears it for free if it’s stored by the engine control unit. But clearing it only turns the light off: if the cause isn’t fixed, P2413 comes back.
Read it on your car
Final OBD reads the faults of every control unit for free, including each make’s own codes, and with Pro explains each one in plain English. Free clears engine faults at no cost.
