P2414: O2 sensor exhaust sample error (bank 1, sensor 1)

The upstream oxygen sensor is reading outside air where it should see exhaust gas. Usually an exhaust leak or a worn sensor.

What P2414 means

The oxygen sensor measures leftover oxygen in the exhaust so the ECU can adjust the fuel mixture. This is the bank 1 sensor before the catalytic converter. The ECU has seen it report a very lean mixture when it should not, as if fresh air were getting in, so it no longer trusts the reading.

Most common causes

  • Exhaust leak ahead of the sensor: manifold gasket, cracked manifold or loose clamp
  • Oxygen sensor not tightened properly in its thread
  • Contaminated or worn oxygen sensor
  • Damaged sensor wiring or connector
  • Intake air leak making the mixture lean

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Puffing or ticking noise from the exhaust, especially when cold
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Slightly rough idle

Can you drive with P2414?

With care You can drive, but have it checked soon: a wrong mixture raises fuel use and can eventually damage the catalytic converter.

How to check it

With the engine cold, listen near the exhaust manifold just after starting for a rhythmic puffing or ticking, which often points to a failed gasket. On live data the sensor should switch quickly between rich and lean at warm idle.
