P2458: Diesel particulate filter regeneration duration

The diesel particulate filter clean-out is taking longer than it should or never finishes. Short trips or a faulty sensor are the usual reasons.

What P2458 means

To empty the particulate filter, the ECU raises exhaust temperature and burns off the soot: this is regeneration. It has a maximum time to do it. If that time is exceeded, or regeneration keeps getting interrupted, it stores this code because the filter is not being cleaned properly.

Most common causes

  • Short or town trips that stop regeneration before it finishes
  • Faulty exhaust temperature sensor or bad reading
  • Differential pressure sensor or its pipes giving wrong data
  • Thermostat stuck open so the engine never warms up
  • Weak oxidation catalyst that does not generate enough heat
  • Injector or EGR fault producing excess soot

  • Engine or DPF warning light on
  • Fan keeps running after switching off
  • Raised idle or hot smell after stopping
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Possible loss of power

How to check it

On your scanner, check whether a regeneration is in progress, the estimated soot load and exhaust temperatures. If everything looks sensible, a steady motorway run without switching off usually lets it finish.
