U0415: Invalid data received from the ABS control module

Another module is receiving impossible or inconsistent data from the ABS, almost always a wheel speed. A wheel sensor or its tone ring is typical.

What U0415 means

The ABS control unit shares each wheel speed and the vehicle speed over the network, used by the engine, gearbox, dashboard and steering. This code is stored by another module when that data arrives out of range or with errors. The ABS unit normally has its own codes pointing to the wheel in trouble.

Most common causes

  • Dirty or damaged wheel speed sensor, or a broken sensor wire
  • Damaged tone ring or magnetic wheel bearing
  • Mismatched tyre sizes or very uneven tyre wear
  • Low or unstable battery voltage
  • Loose or corroded ABS unit connector
  • Faulty ABS unit or one with the wrong software

Symptoms

  • ABS and stability control warning lights on
  • Speedometer failing or jumping
  • Odd gear changes on automatic cars
  • Cruise control cutting out

With care The brakes still work, but ABS and stability control may be off. Drive gently and leave extra distance until it is fixed.

How to check it

With the reader, watch all four wheel speeds live while driving slowly in a straight line: the one reading zero or jumping is the suspect. Also check that all four tyres are the same size.
