U0416: Invalid data received from the vehicle dynamics control module

Another module is receiving impossible data from the stability control module. A yaw sensor, steering angle sensor or pending calibration is typical.

What U0416 means

The vehicle dynamics module runs stability control: it measures how much the car is rotating, the sideways acceleration and the steering angle so it can brake individual wheels and prevent skids. This code is stored by another module when that data arrives out of range or with errors. On many cars this module is the ABS unit itself.

Most common causes

  • Steering angle sensor not calibrated, for example after wheel alignment or steering repairs
  • Faulty or loosely mounted yaw rate or lateral acceleration sensor
  • Defective wheel speed sensor
  • Low or unstable battery voltage
  • Loose or corroded connector on the module or its sensors
  • Faulty vehicle dynamics module or one with the wrong software

  • Stability control warning light on
  • Traction control disabled
  • Driver assistance fault message
  • On some cars, reduced power steering assistance

How to check it

If the wheel alignment was recently done or steering or suspension parts changed, tell the garage: calibrating the steering angle sensor is often enough. With the reader you can check that steering angle reads zero with the wheels straight.
