P0717: Input/turbine speed sensor: no signal

The control unit receives no signal at all from the automatic gearbox input speed sensor, due to a broken wire, the connector or the sensor.

What P0717 means

The input (or turbine) speed sensor measures how fast the shaft going into the automatic gearbox is turning. By comparing it with engine speed and output speed, the control unit knows which gear is engaged, whether anything is slipping and when to shift. This code means that with the car moving the signal never appears.

Most common causes

  • Sensor connector unplugged or with spread terminals
  • Broken sensor wire
  • Faulty sensor
  • Sensor fitted wrongly or too far from its toothed wheel
  • Transmission control unit fault (uncommon)

Symptoms

  • Engine or gearbox warning light on
  • Harsh or badly timed shifts
  • Gearbox stuck in one gear (limp mode)
  • Engine revving up during shifts
