P0715: Input/turbine speed sensor: circuit fault

The control unit is not getting a valid signal from the sensor that measures rotation at the automatic gearbox input; usually the sensor or wiring.

What P0715 means

The input (or turbine) speed sensor measures how fast the shaft going into the automatic gearbox is turning. By comparing it with engine speed and output speed, the control unit knows which gear is engaged, whether anything is slipping and when to shift. This code indicates a general electrical fault in its circuit.

Most common causes

  • Sensor or gearbox connector loose, corroded or oily
  • Damaged sensor wiring
  • Metal particles stuck to the sensor tip
  • Faulty sensor
  • Transmission control unit fault (uncommon)

  • Engine or gearbox warning light on
  • Harsh or badly timed shifts
  • Gearbox stuck in one gear (limp mode)
  • Engine revving up during shifts

Check on the scanner whether output speed or gear ratio codes are stored too: if only this one appears, start with its connector and wiring. If your car has a gearbox dipstick, check the oil level as well.
