What P0716 means

The input (or turbine) speed sensor measures how fast the shaft going into the automatic gearbox is turning. By comparing it with engine speed and output speed, the control unit knows which gear is engaged, whether anything is slipping and when to shift. This code means the signal arrives but is not consistent: for example, it jumps, drops out at times or does not fit the gear and engine speed.

Most common causes

  • Low gearbox oil level
  • Loose or corroded sensor connector
  • Sensor covered in metal particles or not fitted securely
  • Interference from a damaged or poorly shielded wire
  • Worn internal gearbox clutches slipping
  • Transmission control unit fault (uncommon)

  • Gearbox stuck in one gear (limp mode)
  • Engine revving up during shifts

How to check it

If the engine revs rise without the car picking up speed during shifts, tell the garage: that points to internal slipping rather than the sensor. If there is a dipstick, check the gearbox oil level and smell.
