P0524: Engine oil pressure too low

What P0524 means

Without enough oil pressure, engine parts run metal on metal and can be damaged very quickly. This code means measured pressure has dropped below the minimum the ECU considers safe. It is sometimes the sensor, but treat it as real until proven otherwise.

Most common causes

• Low oil level from consumption or a leak
• Oil of the wrong viscosity, very old or diluted with fuel
• Blocked or wrong oil filter
• Faulty oil pressure sensor giving a false reading
• Blocked oil pump pickup screen or worn oil pump
• Internal engine wear (bearings) on high-mileage engines

Symptoms

• Red oil pressure warning light on
• Metallic noises or knocking from the engine
• Engine check message or reduced power on some cars
• Engine warning light on

Can you drive with P0524?

Better not Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off the engine: driving without oil pressure can wreck the engine within minutes. Do not carry on until you have checked the level and know the cause.

How to check it

With the engine off and the car on level ground, wait a few minutes and check the dipstick. If it is low, top up with the correct oil; if the level is fine and the light stays on, do not restart and have the pressure measured with a mechanical gauge.
