P0503: Vehicle speed sensor intermittent, erratic or high
The speed signal drops out, jumps about or reads higher than real. Usually a loose connector, a chafed wire or interference in the wiring.

What P0503 means
The ECU sees the speed signal changing in ways that cannot happen: sudden rises or drops, dropouts, or values that are too high. It is almost always a poor contact or electrical interference, and less often the sensor itself.
Most common causes
- Loose, dirty or corroded sensor connector
- Chafed wire making intermittent contact
- Interference from wiring routed near coils or ignition leads
- Speed sensor with an internal fault or covered in metal filings
- Badly fitted electrical accessories adding noise to the signal
Symptoms
- Speedometer needle flickering
- Automatic gearbox shifting harshly or for no reason
- Cruise control switching itself off
- Engine warning light on

How to check it
Record vehicle speed on your scanner and see whether the jumps line up with bumps in the road. On a lift with the wheels turning, gently wiggling the sensor wiring often reveals the fault.
