P0328: Knock sensor 1 circuit high input (bank 1 or single sensor)

The ECU sees a knock sensor signal that is too high. Often a wire touching a live feed, the connector, the sensor itself or excessive engine noise.

What P0328 means

The knock sensor is bolted to the engine block and works like a microphone: it picks up the vibration of knock (detonation, fuel burning at the wrong moment and hammering the pistons). When it hears it, the ECU retards the ignition to protect the engine. High input means the ECU is reading a voltage above what is possible, usually from an electrical fault, although loud mechanical noise can also play a part. It is sensor 1, on bank 1 or the only one.

  • Bare sensor wire touching another live wire
  • Interference from nearby ignition leads
  • Loud mechanical engine noise
  • Failed knock sensor

With care You can drive, as the ECU usually retards the ignition as a precaution, but the engine is less protected if real knock occurs. Avoid working it hard and get it checked soon.

How to check it

With the engine idling, listen for knocking or metallic noises that were not there before: if there are, mention it to the garage, as the sensor may be picking up a real noise rather than being faulty itself.
