P0458: EVAP purge control valve circuit low
The ECU sees too low a voltage in the purge valve circuit. It is usually a wire shorting to earth, a connector or the valve’s own coil.

What P0458 means
The purge valve opens to let the engine draw in the petrol vapour stored in the charcoal canister. The ECU switches it electrically and monitors its circuit. Circuit low means it sees a voltage below what should be possible, nearly always an electrical fault.
Most common causes
- Loose or corroded connector on the purge valve
- Control wire shorted to earth or broken
- Purge valve coil shorted
- Fuse or supply to the valve at fault
- Rarely, a faulty ECU output
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on
- Sometimes a slightly uneven idle
- Possible petrol smell or hard starting after refuelling
Can you drive with P0458?
With care You can usually drive, but if the idle is rough or the car is hard to start after filling up, get it fixed soon.
How to check it
With the engine running, trigger the purge valve from your scanner if it allows it: you should hear a ticking sound. If it stays silent, check the connector and wiring before replacing the valve.
