P0219: Engine overspeed condition

What P0219 means

The ECU stores this code when engine speed goes past the safety limit, even for a moment. In manual cars the classic cause is selecting too low a gear at speed, and the fuel cut cannot stop it because the wheels are driving the engine. It can also come from a sensor giving a false reading.

Most common causes

• Downshifting at too high a speed in a manual gearbox
• Slipping clutch letting the engine rev up
• Crankshaft position sensor with interference or damaged wiring giving false readings
• Automatic gearbox fault when selecting a gear
• On diesels, engine runaway from oil getting into the intake (rare)

Symptoms

• Engine warning light on
• Possible metallic noise or knocking if the engine was damaged
• Loss of power
• Often no symptoms after the moment it happened

Can you drive with P0219?

With care If it was a one-off and the engine sounds and runs normally, you can drive with care. If there are new noises, smoke or loss of power, stop and have a garage look at it.

How to check it

Think back to whether a gear was dropped at high speed just before; that almost always explains it. If not, watch live rpm at idle and with gentle throttle: sudden impossible jumps point to the crankshaft sensor or its wiring.
