P0088: Fuel rail or system pressure too high
The ECU measures more fuel pressure than it is asking for. Usually the pressure control valve, its circuit or the rail pressure sensor.
| Code | P0088 |
|---|---|
| System | Engine and transmission |
| Group | P00xx, Air, fuel and emissions |
| Type | Generic: it means the same on every make |
| Can you keep driving? | With care |
What P0088 means
The ECU controls fuel pressure in the rail (the pipe feeding the injectors) using a regulator or control valve. If the measured pressure climbs well above what it is asking for and it cannot bring it down, this code is stored. It is mostly seen on direct injection engines, diesel or petrol.
Most common causes
- Loose or corroded pressure control valve connector
- Pressure control valve stuck or dirty
- Rail pressure sensor reading too high
- Blocked or kinked fuel return line
- Wiring fault in the regulator or sensor circuit
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on
- Engine in limp mode with reduced power
- Rough idle or a knocking noise from the engine
- In some cases the engine stalls or is hard to start
Can you drive with P0088?
With care You can drive gently, but excessive pressure strains the injectors and pump. Get it to a garage as soon as you can.
How to check it
Compare desired and actual rail pressure in live data. If actual pressure shoots up even at idle, suspect the regulator; if it shows a fixed, impossible value, suspect the sensor or its wiring.
How to read and clear P0088 with Final OBD
Plug an OBD2 scanner in under the steering wheel, switch the ignition on and open Final OBD. Under Faults you’ll see P0088 with this same explanation and whether it’s confirmed, pending or permanent.
With Free you read this code with its short description for nothing, and clear it if the engine stores it over standard OBD. With Pro you get the full explanation, how the car was running when it was logged (revs, temperature, load) and clearing in every control unit.
Clearing the code only turns the light off: if the cause is still there, it comes back. Clear it once it’s fixed, and not right before the ITV. It’s all in how to read and clear fault codes and in the ITV and OBD.

P0088 is a generic code, so it means the same on any make, for example on Citroën, Hyundai, Mini, Renault, Seat, Volvo. See what Final OBD does on your car in makes and models.

How do you clear P0088?
With an OBD2 scanner and an app like Final OBD, which clears it for free if it’s stored by the engine control unit. But clearing it only turns the light off: if the cause isn’t fixed, P0088 comes back.
Read it on your car
Final OBD reads the faults of every control unit for free, including each make’s own codes, and with Pro explains each one in plain English. Free clears engine faults at no cost.
