P0A80: Replace hybrid battery pack

The ECU sees that the hybrid battery blocks are badly out of balance. Usually battery wear, weak modules or poor battery cooling are to blame.

What P0A80 means

A hybrid’s high-voltage battery is made up of many blocks or modules in series. The control unit compares their voltages and, if one or more fall well below the rest, stores this code. It does not always mean replacing the whole battery: sometimes the fault is a single module, the internal connections or the cooling.

Most common causes

  • Dirty or blocked battery cooling filter or fan (usually near the rear seats), causing the battery to run hot
  • Weak 12 V battery causing false readings
  • Corroded or loose internal connections between battery modules
  • One or more worn battery modules
  • General battery wear from age and mileage
  • Faulty battery voltage sensing wiring or battery control unit

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light and hybrid system warning on
  • Petrol engine starts up more often
  • Less power and higher fuel consumption
  • Battery charge gauge rises and falls very quickly

With care You can usually drive, but the car may limit power and the fault will get worse. Get it to a garage that works on hybrids soon.

How to check it

Check and clean the hybrid battery cooling vent, which clogs with dust and pet hair. If your reader allows it, look at the individual block voltages: the garage will want to know which ones are low.
