P0692: Fan 1 control: circuit high

The ECU sees too high a voltage on the radiator fan control circuit; the fan may run constantly or never come on at all.

What P0692 means

The engine ECU runs the radiator fan, either directly, through a relay or through a small control module, to cool the engine when needed and whenever the air conditioning is on. This code means there is more voltage than expected on the fan 1 control circuit, usually from a wire touching a live feed, a relay stuck on or an open circuit, depending on the design.

Most common causes

  • Fan relay with contacts stuck closed
  • Damp or corroded fan or relay connector
  • Control wire broken or touching a live feed
  • Faulty fan control module
  • ECU fault (uncommon)

Symptoms

  • Fan running all the time, even with a cold engine
  • Fan not starting and temperature rising when stationary
  • Flat battery if the fan keeps running after switching off
  • Engine warning light on
