P0461: Fuel level sensor circuit range/performance

The fuel level sender reports a level that does not match fuel use or hardly changes. Often a sticking float or a worn resistor track.

What P0461 means

The ECU compares the level from the sender with how much fuel it reckons has been used. If the level does not drop as you drive, jumps suddenly or does not fit usage, it logs this code. The circuit is working electrically, but the reading is not believable.

Most common causes

  • Worn patches on the sender’s resistor track
  • Float rubbing, catching or filled with liquid
  • Deformed tank restricting the float arm
  • Connector with an intermittent poor contact
  • Wrong sender fitted after a repair

Symptoms

  • Gauge stuck in one area or dropping in steps
  • Gauge changing suddenly on bends or hills
  • Engine warning light on

How to check it

Note the live level with a full tank and check it every so often as you drive. If it stays stuck at one value and then drops sharply, the sender track is worn.
