P0321: Ignition or distributor engine speed signal out of range
The ECU is getting an engine speed signal from the ignition that does not add up. Usually the sensor, its wiring or the distributor is to blame.

What P0321 means
The ECU needs to know engine speed to time fuel injection and the spark. On cars with a distributor or ignition module, that signal comes from there. This code means the signal is arriving, but with odd values or jumps that do not match what the engine is doing.
Most common causes
- Loose, dirty or corroded connector at the sensor or distributor
- Chafed wiring or interference from nearby spark plug leads
- Worn engine speed sensor or distributor pickup
- Dirty or damaged reluctor ring or pickup teeth
- Faulty ignition module
Symptoms
- Jerking or hesitation when accelerating
- Unstable idle
- Engine occasionally stalls
- Harder starting than usual

How to check it
With a scan tool, watch live rpm at idle and while revving: if the figure jumps sharply or briefly drops to zero with the engine running, the signal is dropping out.
