U0155: Lost communication with the instrument cluster

What U0155 means

The instrument cluster shows speed, revs, fuel and all the warning lights, and on many cars stores data such as mileage. This code means it has stopped talking to the other control units over the data network. On some cars it also plays a part in the immobiliser.

Most common causes

• Low battery or loose terminals
• Blown instrument cluster fuse
• Loose or corroded connector behind the cluster (common after dashboard or radio work)
• Poor ground on the cluster
• Damaged network wiring behind the dashboard
• Faulty instrument cluster (solder joints or display)

Symptoms

• Needles at zero or cluster display dead
• Warning lights not coming on, or all on at once
• Fuel or temperature gauge with no reading
• On some cars, no start

Can you drive with U0155?

With care You can drive carefully if the car runs well, but without the speedometer and warnings you would miss a serious fault such as overheating or low oil pressure. Get it fixed soon.

How to check it

Notice whether the cluster goes fully or partly dead, and whether it happens over bumps or when hot: that points to a connector or solder joint. Meanwhile you can watch engine temperature live with the reader.
