P0748: Pressure control solenoid electrical fault

The control unit sees an electrical fault on the gearbox pressure control solenoid: a broken wire, a bad connector or the coil itself.

What P0748 means

The pressure control solenoid sets the fluid pressure the automatic gearbox uses to clamp its internal clutches. It decides whether gear changes are smooth yet firm. The control unit measures an impossible voltage or current in the circuit of the pressure control solenoid, typical of a broken wire, a short or a burnt-out coil.

Most common causes

  • Connector for the pressure control solenoid loose, corroded or with fluid inside
  • Wire broken, bare or rubbing against the gearbox
  • Gearbox pass-through connector (where the wiring enters) leaking or with loose pins
  • The pressure control solenoid with an open or shorted coil
  • Fuse or power supply to the circuit
  • Transmission control unit (uncommon)

Symptoms

  • Engine or gearbox warning light on
  • Harsh shifts or, the opposite, soft and slipping ones
  • Clunk when selecting D or R
  • Gearbox goes into limp mode

Can you drive with P0748?

With care You can drive gently to a garage, though the gearbox may drop into limp mode and lose gears. If it slips, the more you use it the more it wears.

How to check it

With the ignition off, check the gearbox connector is fully seated, with no green corrosion or fluid inside. If the code comes back straight after clearing, a broken wire or the solenoid coil is the likely culprit.
