P2004: Intake manifold runner control stuck open (bank 1)

The bank 1 intake manifold runner flaps stay open and do not respond. Carbon build-up, the actuator or its linkage are the usual reasons.

What P2004 means

Many engines have flaps in the intake manifold that change the air path for more pull low down or more power higher up. The ECU moves them with an actuator (vacuum or electric) and checks their position; here it sees them staying open even though it asks for the opposite.

Most common causes

  • Actuator vacuum hose loose or split (vacuum type)
  • Flaps or spindle seized with carbon and oil
  • Linkage or ball joint between actuator and spindle loose or broken
  • Failed runner flap actuator
  • Runner position sensor out of adjustment

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Less pulling power at low revs
  • Slightly rough idle or more smoke on diesels
  • Slightly higher fuel use

How to check it

With the engine off, find the actuator on the manifold and see whether its rod is attached to the spindle; on vacuum types, check the small hose. If your scanner can run an actuator test, see whether the rod moves.
