P0653: Sensor reference voltage B: circuit high

The ECU sees too much voltage on the 5 V supply it feeds to several sensors, usually because of a shorted wire or a damaged sensor.

What P0653 means

The ECU powers several sensors with a steady reference voltage, normally 5 volts, split into circuits A, B and so on. Which sensors share circuit B is decided by each manufacturer. This code means that line is carrying more voltage than it should, which usually points to a wire touching a higher-voltage feed or a shorted sensor.

Most common causes

  • Connector on one of the sensors on that line wet, corroded or with bent pins
  • Reference wire chafed and touching a higher-voltage wire
  • A sensor fed from that line failed internally
  • Poorly fitted accessory or previous repair that has bridged wires in the loom
  • Fault in the ECU itself (uncommon)

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Several sensor codes at once (accelerator pedal, pressures, positions)
  • Reduced power or limp mode
  • Implausible readings from some sensors on the scanner
