What P2A00 means

The bank 1 oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter measures oxygen in the exhaust so the ECU can adjust the air and fuel mixture. The ECU has seen its signal behave abnormally: stuck, slow to react, or showing values that do not match what the engine is doing.

Most common causes

  • Aged or contaminated oxygen sensor (oil, coolant, silicone)
  • Exhaust leak ahead of the sensor
  • Air leak in the intake or a vacuum hose
  • Poor contact in the sensor connector or wiring
  • Fuel pressure or injectors upsetting the mixture

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Slightly rough idle
  • May fail the emissions test at inspection

Can you drive with P2A00?

With care You can drive, but fix it soon: with the mixture poorly controlled the car uses more fuel and, over time, the catalytic converter can suffer.

How to check it

Watch this sensor’s voltage or lambda value on live data with the engine warm. It should move quickly; if it stays flat or changes very slowly, the sensor is tired or something is upsetting the mixture.
